Yes, there is at least one retriever named to truly correspond with its geographic origin. The Chessie is that dog, which is also the official state dog of Maryland. Strong, large, powerfully built for the toughest conditions, this dog has a distinctive two-layer coat: wooly underfur, plus short harsh, wavy jopcoat. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is always brown in color, ranging from brown to “deadgrass.” An English sailing ship wrecked off the coast of Maryland contained two survivors: Newfoundland dogs, which were crossed with local hounds, the flat-coat and curly-coated retriever. Bred to work both land and water, the Chessie is the largest of the retriever breeds and some would say the most hard-headed. Burning yellow eyes can intimidate some, but a well-bred and socialized Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a affectionate, loyal, hardworking hunting companion.
